Music in Azabu Jyuban, Tokyo

I recently learned about an amazing space in the heart of Minato City, Tokyo. Guuzen Gekijou ( translated as "Coincidental Theater" or maybe "Happenstance Salon") is in Azabu Jyuban, one of the most diverse and lively neighborhoods of the big city. Next to a small park always full of playing children is a small performance space with a splendid grand piano and great sound. The open-window-and-doors setup encourages passersby to stop and listen to the music floating out into the street. Haunting melodies, arias, lively swing, introspective piano ballads, fusion and new music, all filling the space's carefully arranged variety of seats. The warming spring weather is a perfect match for the music. The owners welcome families with young children and take delight in introducing them to music.

Through a friend's introduction, I've met some of the regulars, including two pictured here: Tanaka on piano, and Mark on upright bass.
